Chinese Star Wenyi Ding Goes Pro After Stellar Amateur Career

Wenyi Ding turns professional after a successful amateur golf career.

Wenyi Ding, a rising star from China, has decided to go pro after topping the Global Amateur Pathway Ranking.

In June, the DP World Tour, The R&A, and the PGA Tour introduced this initiative to help top male amateur golfers transition into professional play. Ding was previously at Arizona State University but left the team in August.

He climbed to the top of the rankings by winning the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan recently. This victory secured him a spot on the 2025 DP World Tour. Fans might think it’s exciting to see such talent rise so quickly.

Path to Professional Golf:

Ding’s journey includes many victories as an amateur golfer. In 2024, he won his first title at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate with an impressive score of 27-under. He also triumphed at July’s Southern Amateur. Last year, Ding got a taste of professional golf by playing in events like China’s Hainan Open and Volvo China Open, where he placed third and seventh respectively. However, during September’s Procore Championship on the PGA Tour, he didn’t make it past the cut.

Now stepping into his professional career, Ding expressed excitement about joining next season’s DP World Tour: “I’m excited to start my journey as a professional and look forward to teeing it up on the DP World Tour next season.” His win in Japan had initially earned him spots in major tournaments like next year’s Masters and US Open but turning pro means giving up those opportunities—a tough decision for him.

Ding is not wasting any time; he’s set to compete this week at the Hangzhou Open back home on the Challenge Tour.

Others benefiting from this pathway include Jacob Skov Olesen who ranks second and gains a Challenge Tour exemption; Luis Masaveu Roncal from Spain; Frenchman Bastian Amat; Americans Nathan Petronzio; Peter Fountain; Ben Warian; Jake Hall—all earning spots on various tours including PGA Americas Latin America Swing for 2025 or Sunshine Tours like Tyran Snyders heading into Fortress Invitational debut soon!

What do you think about these young players making big moves?
