Charlie Woods just won his first major junior golf tournament.
Last week, he missed the cut at the US Junior Amateur and finished 22 over par in a tough debut. But like his dad, Tiger, Charlie bounced back quickly by winning his next event.
He claimed victory at the South Florida Junior Cup on July 31, one of eight major tournaments on the South Florida Junior Tour.
Charlie’s Impressive Win
Though it’s not one of Tiger’s 15 Majors, this win is still impressive. Charlie shot 73-68-73 at BallenIsles Country Club’s East Course and was the only player to finish under par out of 63 participants.
In his post-round comments, Charlie showed determination similar to his father’s legendary spirit. He said that missing out at the US Junior Amateur made him even more driven to succeed.
“I wanted it so bad,” said Woods. “I felt focused, and I knew what I had to do to get it done. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do better.”
Fans might think this shows how much potential Charlie has for the future.
“I feel like it was a compilation of a lot of hard work this summer. I wanted to redeem myself, and I feel great about how I played,” he added.
Living Up To The Name
Having Tiger as a dad brings extra pressure for Charlie, but he’s showing a great attitude towards golf . He often plays with Tiger at events like the PNC Championship where their similarities are clear.
Despite being young, he’s been seen helping Tiger during practice rounds at big tournaments like Augusta. His father even mentioned how helpful Charlie is with putting advice.
After struggling at the US Junior Amateur, every performance will be closely watched to see if he can match up to expectations. Earlier attempts like shooting an 81 in US Open qualifying or an 86 in pre-qualifying for PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic didn’t go well either.
But considering he’s only 15 and has already won two events in two months on his level, he’s doing pretty well overall.
From these recent experiences, it’s clear that whether or not he reaches his dad’s heights won’t be due to lack of effort or resilience.
