Charley Hull was the top scorer for Team Europe at the Solheim Cup with three points.
One of her wins was against World No.1 Nelly Korda during the Sunday singles, but it wasn’t enough to stop Team USA from winning 15.5-12.5 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. This was Suzann Pettersen’s second match as captain after leading Europe to a tie in 2023, retaining the trophy.
The next Solheim Cup will be held in two years in the Netherlands at Bernardus Golf. Although there’s time before deciding on the next captain, Hull already has someone in mind: one of Team Europe’s 2024 vice captains.
Future Leadership:
Hull is getting ready for this week’s LPGA Tour event, the Kroger Queen City Championship. Before the tournament, she shared her thoughts about who might lead Europe in 2026. She said, “I don’t know really. I feel like… I honestly feel that Mel Reid would make a great captain.”
She praised Mel Reid’s qualities: “Mel is one of my favorite people on this planet,” Hull said. “She gets me; I get her. She’s so much fun and can be serious when needed. She brings a lot of atmosphere to the team.”
Fans might think it’s exciting to see such strong support for future leadership within the team.
Hull also mentioned Anna Nordqvist as another potential candidate but noted that she might still be playing by then, making it tricky for her to take on a captain role too soon.
For this week’s event, Hull aims to improve upon last year’s performance where she narrowly lost to Minjee Lee. However, she’s feeling exhausted from last week’s efforts: “Yeah, I’m absolutely shattered,” she admitted. “Playing nine holes today wore me out.”
Reflecting on her match against Korda which she won 6&4, Hull shared how intense it was: “If I’m playing against Nelly, I just really enjoy it out there… my mindset going into that day was super focused.”
What do you think about Hull’s choice for future captain?
