Golf star Charley Hull just made a bold $10,000 bet that she can kick her smoking habit for good.
The 28-year-old English pro laid down the challenge at Sunningdale Golf Club, handing over her cigarettes to fellow golfer Ryan Evans in a dramatic Instagram moment.
“Deal is a deal. Let’s see if I’m a woman of my word,” Hull posted, before telling Evans on camera: “If I pick up a cigarette in the next two months, I’ll give you 10-grand.”
It’s quite a turnaround for Hull, who made headlines at last year’s US Women’s Open when she was spotted smoking on the course. She later admitted to smoking about five cigarettes per round.
“I find it quite funny, because I actually do go to the gym and I’m a very healthy person,” Hull explained at the time. “I only smoke. I hardly drink. I don’t need to drink because, actually, I can have a fun time without it.”
The habit runs in the family. Her dad’s been smoking 40 a day since he was 12 years old – he’s now 75. Her 25-year-old nephew smokes too.
“I hate smoking,” Hull admits. “I used to curse at my dad when I was younger for smoking, but I think it’s to do a little bit when I’m stressed.”
Interestingly, that viral smoking video actually boosted her social media following by about 70,000 people.
But Hull’s been letting her golf do the talking lately. She grabbed a win at the Aramco Team Series Riyadh last November and followed it up with a second-place finish at The Annika.
This year’s looking promising too. She’s already notched two top-20 finishes on the LPGA Tour and made it to the last-16 at the Sunningdale Foursomes, playing alongside her friend Georgia Hall.
Now she’s got 10,000 more reasons to stay smoke-free for the next two months.
