Cameron Smith is set to play in the New South Wales Open Golf Championship later this year.
The tournament, featuring an $800,000 AUD prize pool, will take place from November 14-17 at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club. This course is known for its challenging setup and beautiful scenery, making it one of Australia’s top inland courses.
Normally costing $60 for 18 holes, Murray Downs will host some of Australia’s best golfers this year. Smith, who has six PGA Tour titles and three LIV Golf wins, will be among them. He’s also a three-time Australian PGA Championship winner .
Smith shared his excitement about playing in the NSW Open: “I love supporting Australian golf and when the opportunity arises to play, I want to be there. I try to get back home as much as I can.” He added that he’s thrilled about the event growing into a major tournament and looks forward to seeing fans at Murray Downs.
Event’s Impact:
Graeme Phillipson from Golf NSW believes Smith’s participation will greatly boost the event. He said: “His presence will undoubtedly elevate the level of competition and create an incredible atmosphere for all attendees.” Fans might think it’s awesome news because it means more excitement!
Smith is no stranger to large crowds at home tournaments. He has seen impressive turnouts at both LIV Golf Adelaide events, as well as the DP World Tour-sanctioned Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship.
Smith has played in every edition of these tournaments since turning pro in 2013, except for 2020 and 2021. After the LIV season ends in September, he plans to participate again. Fellow LIV golfer Joaquin Niemann might join him too since Niemann aims to earn world-ranking points by playing several DP World Tour-sanctioned events.
Although Smith hasn’t won a trophy in Australia since the 2022 PGA Championship, his team Ripper GC did win a thrilling playoff against Stinger GC during their last LIV visit. Before heading back home, Smith has two more LIV events this season where he hopes to improve his standings both individually and with his team.
