Bryson DeChambeau’s Masters dream slipped away Sunday, but he didn’t have to wait long for a reminder of his own major triumph.
Just hours after watching Rory McIlroy claim his fifth major at Augusta, DeChambeau found himself back at Pinehurst No. 2 – the scene of his incredible US Open victory last summer.
It was there, on the 72nd hole, where he’d pulled off one of golf’s most clutch shots. A perfect sand save that snatched victory from McIlroy’s grasp and earned him his second US Open title.
Now, that moment is immortalized in steel. The USGA honored DeChambeau with a commemorative plaque next to that very same bunker on the 18th hole.
“Bryson DeChambeau blasted a 55-degree wedge from this bunker to 4 feet, setting up his winning putt in the 124th US Open Championship – June 16, 2024,” reads the plaque.
Fans packed the historic course to welcome their champion home. DeChambeau, mic’d up for the occasion, spent time signing autographs and posing for photos with supporters who’d come to relive that magical moment.
When it came time to speak about his win, emotion overcame the usually analytical golfer.
“That week, I always felt something was going to happen,” DeChambeau said, fighting back tears. “My idol, Payne Stewart. Going to SMU. Wearing the flat cap… I never would have thought it would have been me to have that shot, that opportunity.”
The memory clearly meant even more following his father’s passing in November 2022.
“I really wish my dad could have saw that,” DeChambeau said, his voice cracking.
Of course, everyone wanted to see him recreate the famous shot. The original wedge now sits in the US Open museum, but that didn’t stop him from trying.
After a couple of attempts came up short, DeChambeau laughed it off: “The greens were firmer when I played!”
The 31-year-old won’t have to wait long for his next shot at major glory. The US Open heads to Oakmont next, where he’ll look to add to his impressive collection.
And Pinehurst? It’ll be back in the rotation through 2047 – plenty more chances for DeChambeau to create magic in those legendary sandtraps.
