The US Mid-Amateur final was an absolute thriller.
Evan Beck dominated Bobby Massa, achieving the second-largest victory in the event’s history. Beck, who played college golf at Wake Forest, had a score to settle after losing last year’s final to Stewart Hagestad. This time, he came back with a vengeance.
Beck surged ahead with an 8-up lead after just 18 holes. By the time they reached the end at Kinloch Golf Club, his victory was almost certain.
Beck’s Triumph and Future Opportunities:
This win means Beck has secured spots in several prestigious tournaments: the 2025 US Open at Oakmont and the next two US Amateurs. He’s also likely to get an invitation to the 2025 Masters in April.
“I’m playing probably the best golf of my life,” said Beck after his 9&8 win. “So maybe if I stuck with it (golf), I could have made some money. Happy with today, with this week, and it’s really special to do it so close to home. Looking forward to what’s next.”
Fans might think this is just the beginning for him.
At the moment of his victory, Beck was four-under for the 28 holes played. Reflecting on last year’s loss where he was down by nine at one point before ending 3&2, he shared how tough that experience was but expressed joy over his comeback.
Massa acknowledged Beck’s strong performance: “He (Beck) was very solid today. Great player. I definitely didn’t put a lot of pressure on him.” Massa admitted struggling with driving and putting: “I couldn’t read the greens today… Kept under-reading them a little bit, then I started overreading them.”
