Adam Scott is the main attraction at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship this week and is considered the favorite to win the tournament. Scott, the former World No.1, has had a tumultuous year with his iron play, prompting him to test out new clubs in Bermuda. The 2013 Masters champion had a decent season on the PGA Tour, but his Strokes Gained: Approach number of -0.169 ranked him 140th on tour, which is a significant drop from his other statistics. “If we’re going to look at the stats this year, my iron play was the worst,” he said.
Scott is trying out a new set of clubs from the Japanese brand Miura, which he claims were personally customized by ‘Mr. Miura’ himself. As a free agent, Scott has been experimenting with different equipment over the past couple of seasons, including the use of some ‘AS’ custom Miura irons. “So I’ve been addressing that and I’ve made some equipment changes and, you know, testing some of that stuff still this week,” he said. This marks his first start of the FedEx Cup Fall, and he sees it as a tune-up for two upcoming home events in Australia.
The decision to play in Bermuda was influenced by several factors, including his proximity to Boston and the TGL announcement for Boston Common golf. Scott expressed his excitement about the TGL announcement and mentioned his recent activities in Boston. “It felt like we did a lot of activities around there, it was really fun,” he said. Additionally, he stated, “I’m playing in Australia in just a couple weeks’ time. After a fairly quiet period at the back end of the year, it’s a good time to get going again, not only try and play well this week.”
Scott emphasized the importance of getting back into competitive play and improving his standings before the next season starts. “It would be nice to get a result going on the PGA Tour before next season starts and try and improve my standings and get a position in a couple of these signature events,” he said.
