Time is running out for some players to secure their spot in the 2024 LIV Golf League.
The next event is LIV Golf UK by JCB, followed by Greenbrier in mid-August. Then, it’s off to Bolingbrook Golf Club for the Chicago event and Individual Championship round.
If players lose their status, they have one last shot at the LIV Golf Promotions event in winter. Otherwise, they’ll likely head to the Asian Tour due to a mutual agreement between tours.
Players can earn points by finishing in the top-24 individually or if their team finishes eighth or higher after three rounds. With two wildcard spots added and Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII joining before the season started, up to eight players might face relegation instead of four.
Relegation Battle:
Anthony Kim and Hudson Swafford are currently at the bottom with zero points from seven and ten starts respectively. However, as wildcards, they might avoid relegation based on limited contract details believed to be one-year deals.
James Piot, Chase Koepka, Sihwan Kim, and Jediah Morgan exited in 2023 despite Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer being safe due to their captaincy roles.
This season sees Harold Varner III, Pat Perez, and Branden Grace needing strong finishes to avoid being cut. Fans may find it surprising that Varner is struggling after his seventh-place finish last year.
Kieran Vincent, Branden Grace (again), Kalle Samooja, and Scott Vincent are particularly at risk unless they finish in the top half of standings. Bubba Watson remains safe as RangeGoats’ captain despite his low rank (50th).
Laurie Canter has left LIV for DP World Tour opportunities but will likely be relegated anyway; he recently won his first European Tour victory at European Open.
Harold Varner III (7 points), Pat Perez (7.76 points), and Jinichiro Kozuma (8.40 points) are also on shaky ground with only a small gap above Scott Vincent below them.
Here’s how things stand:
– 46th: Jinichiro Kozuma – 8.40
– 47th: Pat Perez – 7.76
– 48th: Harold Varner III – 7
– Drop Zone:
– Laurie Canter – 4.30
– Bubba Watson* – 3.66
– Scott Vincent – 3.40
– Kalle Samooja – 3.40
– Branden Grace – 3.22
– Kieran Vincent – 2 .47
– Hudson Swafford – 0
– Anthony Kim – 0
(*Exempt from relegation)
