The 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon will have a huge crowd.
In April, the R&A shared that all tickets for this year’s Open were sold out. They expect 250,000 people to come to Royal Troon during the week.
This makes it the third-largest attendance ever for The Open, just behind last year’s event at Royal Liverpool (261,180) and the 2022 edition at St Andrews (290,000). It also means The Open will have the biggest crowds of any Major in 2024.
R&A’s Mike Woodcock mentioned they’ve done a lot to make sure fans can enjoy their time at Royal Troon. “It is a big increase and I think there’s been a huge amount done to try and make sure that the number we bring in is what the golf course can accommodate,” he said. “There is a lot of space out there and we’ve done a lot of work on the throughflow, pathways, spectator areas, etc.”
He added that they worked hard on making sure fans can move around easily and find good spots to watch. Viewing decks and grandstands are ready for everyone.
Fan Experience:
An L-shaped grandstand with room for 1,500 spectators will be set up around Royal Troon’s famous eighth hole – called ‘Postage Stamp’. Additionally, 3,500 seats will be available on the 18th hole.
Fans might think it’s amazing how much effort goes into making these events enjoyable.
The last time The Open was held at Royal Troon was in 2016 when 173,000 fans attended. Since then, some changes have been made to the Old Course. For instance, they lengthened the par-5 sixth hole to an impressive 623 yards – now one of the longest holes in Open history!
Interestingly enough , there’s also potential for having one of its shortest holes ever if they use forward tees and place pins closer on the par-3 eighth hole which could measure just about 99 yards.
The excitement builds as we look forward to July! What do you think about these changes?
